The lives of dogs and people have been intwined for tens of thousands of years and our close relationship continues to play an important role in modern society through providing companionship, security, and specialist duties such as search and detection. Dogs are also adaptive at surviving and reproducing, which has enabled their populations to expand, even without close dependency with a specific guardian. As dog populations expand, the potential for conflict with people and negative perceptions towards dogs increases. Governments and animal welfare organisations now face the challenge of improving the management of dog populations, however the specific methods and actions for implementing robust dog population management (DPM) initiatives are often difficult to understand, monitor, and implement. This course outlines the approaches developed by WVS and its partners for implementing DPM efforts across the world.
