Pain management is a significant consideration in any invasive procedure and can be easily overlooked when planning and carrying out surgery. Poorly managed pain can result in multiple detrimental effects for patients, contributing to an increase in perioperative morbidity and mortality.
In this section we cover the concept of pain, how to recognise and assess it, and explore the different classes of drugs and methods used for pain management (analgesia). By understanding and applying these principles, we can ensure that our patients are cared for correctly and maximise their chances of a full recovery without complications.
