The initial post-operative period starts once the surgery is complete, and continues to the point when the animal is has fully regained consciousness from anaesthesia and is able to weight bear and move around by itself. During this time, mortality rates are high and patients are at increased risk. Special care and attention is needed to prevent avoidable complications and these principles will be covered in this section.
