Preventing human deaths from rabies
Preventing human deaths from rabies

Humans are at risk of rabies in many parts of the world due to close coexistence with dog populations in which the rabies virus circulates. Whilst rabies remains untreatable once signs begin, it is entirely preventable if correct post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is administered in the period immediately following exposure. Efforts to prevent human rabies deaths have focused on increasing awareness of and access to PEP, which is administered to an estimated 15 million people every year. In this section we will outline WHO recommendations for human rabies vaccination - always refer to the WHO resources for the most up to date information.
