Introduction

Most mares give birth without any concerns, and sometimes owners were not even aware they were carrying a foal. It can be hard to predict when foaling will occur, especially if a covering date is not known. The process of foaling is rapid and there is limited time to intervene if the process is not progressing well to have a good outcome for the mare and foal.

This section covers:

  • Normal foaling
  • Newborn foal checks
  • Abortion
  • Dystocia
  • Post foaling checks and problems

Working equines are often worked up until they deliver the foal, but ideally their workload should be reduced in the third trimester as the foal develops. Breeding before the mare/ jenny has reached maturity at 3 - 4 years old carries increased risks. Malnutrition and disease put the mare at risk of losing the pregnancy. A good diet and preventative care are essential.
