Once your patient is fully anaesthetised, and prior to being prepared for surgery, there are some additional tasks to address. For both routine canine castration and OHE, the patient should be receive intravenous (IV) fluid therapy to maintain hydration status and to mitigate any fluid losses during surgery.
Other considerations may include the administration of a single, IV pre-operative antibiotic dose, and the advantages and disadvantages of this will be discussed. Lastly, many free-roaming, stray and owned dogs will contain endo- and ectoparasites, and so administering a treatment at this time is beneficial.
