In this topic, we will cover the classification of wounds, which is important in determining a treatment plan, as well as in communicating the clinical presentation to colleagues.
We mainly use two types of classification; degree of contamination, and type of wound. The degree of wound contamination indicates the likelihood of it becoming infected, and guides our treatment approach. Classifications range from clean (created surgically with asepsis) to dirty/infected wounds presenting with pus and debris. Classification based on the type of wound includes categories such as abrasions, burns, and lacerations, are also described.
