Introduction

Parenteral vaccines for rabies (i.e. vaccines administered by injection into the muscle or under the skin) were first developed over 100 years ago. Modern parenteral vaccines are safe and extremely effective at protecting dogs against rabies after a single injection. At campaign costs of between 0.20 to 0.50 USD per dose, they are extremely cost effective for immunising dogs that can be held for injection by an owner or staff.

In this section we will cover the critical aspects of vaccine handling and care, and the methods of mass dog vaccination using parenteral vaccines, including the Central point, Door-to-door, and Capture-vaccinate-release approaches.
