Temporarily covering a wound with a clean, dry bandage is a crucial first step to prevent further contamination and protect the wound whilst the patient is stabilised (oxygen therapy, IV fluids, analgesia). Once stabilised, the bandage is removed and wound treatment is initiated. The wound can be covered at home by the client following veterinary instructions, or at the clinic by a vet.
At home (instruct owner)
If the wound is grossly contaminated, the owner can bathe it with lukewarm tap water to provide early decontamination. The owner can then cover the wound during transport to the clinic to minimise contamination. Instruct the owner to gently wrap a clean cloth, gauze, or temporary bandage around the wound. Ensure the bandage isn’t too tight, and advise the owner to bring the injured animal for treatment as soon as possible.

At the clinic
Upon arrival, the clinician should assess the wound during the triage exam and then apply a sterile dressing or bandage to cover the wound. The patient should be stabilised before removing the temporary bandage and proceeding with wound treatment.
